Why I Started The Work In Progress Blog

Why This Blog Exists

I started The Work in Progress for a few reasons I lightly touched on in my About page. This post is where I want to slow things down and explain it more clearly.

At its core, I started this blog because I want to continue expanding my knowledge for myself and for my long-term success. I want to grow beyond my current tasks, take on more responsibility, and move up when I’m genuinely ready to do so. Not just qualified on paper, but confident enough to answer questions thoughtfully and understand the work I’m doing.

I want to be good at what I do, and I want to understand why I’m doing it.

Sharing What I Learn as I Go

I genuinely enjoy writing and sharing what I know, especially when it helps someone else make sense of something that once felt confusing to me. I’m always open to people reaching out, offering different perspectives, or teaching me something new.

This blog isn’t about presenting myself as an expert with all the answers. It’s a place to think things through openly, build practical skills, and share what I’m learning in a way that feels honest and useful for those looking for career growth.

One of my long-term goals is to become the person people can rely on when something needs to be done quickly and correctly. Just as important to me, though, is understanding how that work actually helps the person asking or contributes to the company as a whole. I don’t want to complete tasks blindly. I want context, reasoning, and purpose behind the work.

My Career Isn’t Linear and I’m Okay With That

Although I’m currently working in accounting, I still find human resources and finance incredibly interesting, and I genuinely loved the classes I took in both areas. Just because I’m not working directly in those fields right now doesn’t mean I won’t explore them again in the future.

That’s what a degree is for. It provides options, a foundation, and sufficient understanding to transition between areas as your interests and opportunities evolve. I don’t believe career growth needs to follow a single, rigid path or look a certain way. I want to keep all my interests active, continue learning, and stay open to where they might lead.

This blog provides me with a platform to do exactly that.

Being Intentional About Growth

There are moments in your career when you have to be honest with yourself. You need to think about whether the work you’re doing is helping you build skills, credibility, or opportunities that matter to you in the long run.

That doesn’t mean being selfish in a negative way. It means being intentional. Growth doesn’t happen by accident, and no one else will prioritize your development more than you will. At the same time, being driven doesn’t mean saying yes to everything or letting yourself be taken advantage of. Finding that balance is something I want to talk about openly here.

What Was Missing From Existing Career Content

Another reason this blog exists is documentation. I want to capture what I know now, how I think now, and see how that changes as I progress further in my career and life. There’s value in looking back and understanding what shifted, what stayed the same, and what I would approach differently.

A lot of the content I’ve been consuming lately just hasn’t been working for me. Videos often feel rushed or repetitive. Articles are scattered. When you search for something like Excel tips, you’re met with a mix of outdated information, quick tricks, and overly long tutorials with no clear starting point.

It’s overwhelming.

I wanted a place where information is organized, explained clearly, and easy to return to when you need it.

What You’ll Find on This Blog

My goal is to organize my notes, tips, and explanations in one place that is free and easy to access. Over time, I’d like to create worksheets and practice materials, especially because I struggled to find free resources that felt safe and reliable to download.

Eventually, I’d also like to create templates and tools for people who want a starting point without spending hours building something from scratch. That said, this blog will always focus on sharing real knowledge first, not locking everything behind a paywall.

Why “The Work in Progress” Fits

The name The Work in Progress felt right because that’s exactly what this is. There is still so much to learn. I’m young. Careers change. Tools change. Expectations change.

I want to change with them, keeping my knowledge current so I can stay capable and valuable in the workplace, and hopefully help others do the same.

I also want to talk honestly about my past experiences. If someone can learn from something I did or something I would now do differently, I’m grateful for that. I know how much I still have to learn, and I want this to be a space where learning goes both ways.

If you’re tired of schemes and shortcuts and just want clear, business-focused content that doesn’t put you to sleep, this space is for you. If you want to build real skills, understand what you’re doing, and value career growth, I’m glad you’re here.

This will take time and practice, but I believe it can be made digestible and maybe even a little fun.

Welcome to The Work in Progress.
